Recycled Mosaic Art

Guide to finding and salvaging recycled mosaic material.

Common recycled materials for making mosaics:
  • old china plates
  • tea cups
  • shells
  • beads
  • ceramic pieces and figurines
  • cork
  • household tiles, used and stripped from walls or floors
  • scrap glass, mirror
  • found objects: metal, plastic, stone, teeth, bone
  • buttons
  • marbles
  • stones
  • typewriter keys
  • jewelry
  • small rusty tools
  • coins
  • beads
  • bottle caps
  • nuts and bolts
  • dice, rope, industrial waste like metal rings, chandelier pieces, watch faces, CDs, etc.

Nearly anything you find can become mosaic matieral! Just keep in mind, when working with found objects and non-traditional mosiac material, some may be damaged by frost, like beads. Shells may be too porous to be grouted without sealing, as they will stain. Also, scrap tiles can vary a lot in quality, thickness and ease of cutting. Backing and adhesives must be chosen with care in order to accomodate your various materials. Also make sure that bulky and odd-shaped items are glued or attached firmly.

Tips and locations for salvaging mosaic materials:

Collect as much material as you can, or as much as you can tolerate storing if you don't think you will use it right away. One great score could last you a while, and there's no guarantee of when you'll find more free or cheap supplies again. Here are a few recommended places to find recycled mosaic materials:

  • Tile shops, tilesetters, flooring outlets and home improvement centers: ask the managers for broken tiles.
  • Look around the dumpsters at home improvement centers or tile shops for damaged discards.
  • Search your garage and those of your friends and family garages
  • charity shops
  • yard sales
  • Craigslist-check the free listings
  • Freecycle
  • discarded stained glass pieces from glass artists

  • Mosaic bases can also be items that would otherwise have been discarded, like old salvaged doors and windows, scraps of siding, molding and plywood. All of this can be found at construction sides, having been discarded by builders.
