Mosaic Art Glass

Mosaic Art Glass is UN-tumbled shards of American-made stained glass in colors chosen for pigment density and opacity. The shards are sharper than molded tile and require a little extra care in handling, but the Rubbing Stones and Marble Files we sell are useful for smoothing edges. We also sell individual colors of American-made stained glass in 6-inch sheets if you need an individual color.

Using Mosaic Art Glass To Make Hand-Cut Tile

Caution: Sharper Edges Than Molded Tile

Stained glass is usually sharper than regular molded glass mosaic tile, so care must be used in cutting and handling. Also, extra care must be used in grouting to ensure that sharp edges are not left exposed. At the studio, we sometimes cut up sheets into tiles and then swirl the tiles around in a plastic bucket with a little water to knock off the razor slivers from the freshly-cut edges (called flash or groze). The Rubbing Stones and Marble Files we sell are useful for smoothing and rounding edges, and are recommended when the glass is for a wall or architectural element.

The traditional tool used by stained glass artists for this purpose is the grozing pliers, but some people find it too aggressive, and the rubbing stones and marble files produce smoother edges, especially when used by a novice.

Product Coverage

Each two-pound bag is approximately 1.25 square feet of glass. If you cut up these pieces into mosaic tiles of about 3/4 inch or less and use a grout gap of 1/16 inch, then the bag could cover 1.5 square feet.

Compatibility

The thickness is approximately 1/8 inch and nominally the same as the 3/8-inch and 3/4-inch glass mosaic tile we sell.

Cutting Tile

All the glass we sell can be cut quickly with minimal force using a pair of mosaic glass cutters.
